WASHINGTON (SOA) — The dark web is a marketplace of anonymous websites filled with illegal activity, from the sale of identity theft tools to illegal drugs, weapons, and worse. The volume of illicit drug circulation on the narco-scene depends on the market availability, local culture, specific drug effects, and legal status of the substance. Surveys, death certificate data, and medical reports are the principal sources for studying substance use problems. Unfortunately, there is neither neutral nor complete information in medical sources on how this drug is spread and what harm it brings to the communities.

Silk Road launched in 2011, and although it was shut down by the Federal Bureau of Investigations by 2013, it took less than a month for its successor, Silk Road 2.0, to launch. Silk Road 2.0 was then shut down once again in 2014, and the United States government later seized more than $1 billion worth of Bitcoin in November 2020. Tor’s clever traffic encryption system makes it very difficult for the police to know where these sites — and the people who use them — are located. It’s a natural place for an uncensored drugs marketplace, as it is for whistleblower websites and political dissidents, which also use the same techniques to keep their visitors hidden. In this article, we’ll explore the history of the Silk Road, its impact on the internet and cybercrime, and the legacy it left behind as the online marketplace that reshaped the digital black market landscape.
We present a view about how such services operate and how different entities interact with each other (Figure 1). We first conducted a whole-site crawl of anonymous online marketplaces and forums to solicit data. We aimed to profile the opioid supply chain in anonymous markets and forums via a large-scale, longitudinal measurement study on anonymous market listings and posts. Toward this, we propose a series of techniques to collect data; identify opioid jargon terms used in the anonymous marketplaces and forums; and profile the opioid commodities, suppliers, and transactions.
The majority of the internet (an estimated 95 percent) exists within the deep web, unindexed by search engines like Google and Bing. It’s a place where you’ll find data leaks and illegal trades, but also legitimate, legal online activities users want to carry out without attracting the attention of law enforcement agencies or governments. It’s a part of the internet that’s less regulated and more shadowy, for better and for worse.
While there are still people who buy drugs in this manner, the internet and social media have changed drug buying, as they’ve changed so many other aspects of life in the 21st century. These days, many people looking to purchase drugs simply need to turn on their computers and browse the dark web. Using cryptocurrency, the unregulated internet currency that doesn’t involve banks, individuals can buy drugs and have them shipped to their homes or a post office box the next day. The first major anonymous online market, Silk Road, emerged seven years ago and quickly gained the attention of media, government authorities and law enforcement, according to a research paper published last month by the International Journal of Drug Policy. The teenager had been using research chemicals — substances that often mimic the effects of illicit drugs but are not federally controlled — but he was looking for a broader variety than what he was getting from vendors on the internet.

And cryptocurrencies add another layer of protection for those seeking to duck police suspicion. According to the RCMP’s national headquarters and municipal police forces in cities such as Calgary, there are growing indications that the drug trade is increasingly moving to the dark web. We compared our method with the state-of-the-art topic modeling method Machine Learning for Language Toolkit (MALLET) 30 and our model without transfer learning stage (baseline).
